Innovation is highly prized throughout all disciplines of human endeavour, not just in music. It requires a person with both natural talent and a true devotion to the art. Ralph Towner is precisely that kind of man, and at the happy age of 77, his creative potential is as ebullient as ever. Most of us know him mainly as a mainstay member of Oregon and fellow musician to some of the most striking figures of the jazz scene (Keith Jarrett, Jan Garbarek, or Egberto Gismonti, to name but a few), but his importance lies mainly in his novel approach to composition and the adaptation of the pianistic style of play to the neck of the acoustic guitar. As a boy – and originally a pianist – he was enraptured by Bill Evans, and even his later fascination for the classic guitar could not stay free of Evans’ influence. Ralph Towner has been a principal artist for ECM since 1972, and his musical stoicism has made countless friends throughout the world. Solo recital is Towner’s discipline par excellence, and his performance at the Strings of Autumn will be further enriched by the spiritual atmosphere of the St Agnes Convent.
