Legendary pianist and composer Herbie Hancock has been an integral part of jazz since 1960. As a member of one of the most influential jazz bands in history, the second quintet of Miles Davis, he was one of the pioneers of the jazz avant-garde. His recordings from the 1970s (e.g., with The Headhunters) combined electric jazz, funk, and rock to form an inimitable style that continues to impact contemporary music today. With his 1980s album “Future Shock”, Hancock took the field of electronic dance music by storm and provided a several hit songs, including “Rockit”. At the same time, he continued to work with VSOP, an acoustic group that featured his colleagues from Miles Davis’s band. Herbie kept up his relentless creative spree in the subsequent decades, and he continues to do so even now, as brazen as ever, without the slightest regard for his nominal pension age. Hancock won an Oscar for his music to the film ‘Round Midnight and can boast a total of fourteen Grammy Awards, including an Album of the Year for River: The Joni Letters. Many of his compositions have become modern-day standards with a major impact on most contemporary styles of music. With a little hyperbole, it could be said that without Hancock, some of the bands at this year’s String of Autumn would never exist. The fresh fruits of creativity, which Hancock will share with us this November, are as yet covered by a soft veil of mystery. All the better to pique our interest and anticipation.
