Křivoklát Castle – stronghold of Czech Kings

The castle dates from the 12th century. This magnificent Royal Castle was well-favoured by numerous Czech rulers. Later on, the impregnable fortress became a much dreaded prison. Today you can admire the beautifully preserved castle with its charming Gothic spaces – chief among them the Castle Chapel, the Royal Hall and the Knights Hall. The Castle battlements offer wonderful views of the dense woods all around.

The tour also takes you to the dungeons and torture chamber as well as the ‘black kitchen’. During the season, a whole range of interesting and attractive events take place here. Worth mentioning is the Noir Film Festival in August, a showcase of black-and-white American films from the 1940s and 50s, screened in the castle itself. For two December weekends the castle hosts the traditional Advent Markets, which you can reach by special steam train, pulled by the historic locomotive dubbed ‘Her Ladyship’.
