Prague - a lush green city

Every Praguer will confirm our city is full of large and lovely parks. Or at least, every dog-walker will. But it’s good to see the word spreading across Europe and the whole wide world! Prague was ranked as one of the most lush green cities in the world. It surpassed the likes of London, Vienna or Rio De Janeiro. But let’s take a closer look at the HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Chotkovy sady

Prague’s oldest park: Vojanovy sady

Considered the oldest part-preserved and publicly accessible gardens in Prague - dating from the 13th century. With any luck, you’ll even find a peacock feather, given how many nest here. The park also boasts an apiary, some ponds and two chapels. It’s just the sanctuary from big city hustle-and-bustle.

Prague’s largest park: Stromovka

Full of trees, it’s even been called Prague’s Central Park. Fancy a stroll, some refreshments, a dip, a walk with your dog, sporting activities, or just an amble around, to look for mushrooms or take a breath of fresh air? Stromovka park is the ideal choice. An oasis of peace and relaxation, an island of greenery in the midst of a noisy metropolis, Prague’s largest park. All this and much more awaits you in the ‘Royal Deer-park’, aka the Stromovka. With its nearly 250 acres (100 ha), it is clearly the largest park in Prague.

Prague’s most captivating park: Chotkovy sady

This English-style wooded park is more of a small arboretum. There are over 55 woody species here, right near the first Renaissance building in Prague - Queen Anne’s Summer House. It offers an exceptionally fine panoramic view of the whole metropolis, featuring Prague’s most beautiful landmarks, jostling spires and towers.

Prague’s grandest park: the Wallenstein garden

This garden, with its strictly geometrical layout, features not only peacocks, but also some exceptional statuery. It was established along with the Wallenstein Palace in the 17th century. A substantial building – the so-called sala terrena, which was unprecedented in its time, and the artificial grotto are sure to captivate your gaze. In summer, the garden hosts concerts and theatre performances.

Prague’s most romantic park: Petřín

This hillside park could easily claim the name ‘Poetřín’, because you will find statues of Czech romantic poets at the foot of the hill. It is one of Prague’s greatest green expanses. Especially magical are its Rose Garden or ‘Rosarium’, the Gardens of the hillside restaurant Nebozízek, or the hilltop Seminary Garden with over 2,100 fruit trees. Petřín Gardens are all the more interesting because a short walk from the Lookout Tower will take you to the Štefánik Observatory, from which you may gaze at the romantic night sky. You can take a funicular railway car to the top of the hill.

There are other parks waiting for you to discover and explore!

370 thousand trees

In 2019, Prague City Hall set itself the goal of planting a million new trees on its territory within eight years. Under this plan 370 thousand new trees have been planted in Prague to date. They are growing in leafy new city parks, orchards and lining the city streets.

Let’s tot-up to a million trees together!
