- 20. 5. 2016 – 30. 10. 2016
Works by Jiří Sozanský whose common theme is Jan Palach
Jiří Sozanský (b. 1946) is without discussion one of the artists who responsibly conceive their role in the concept of art as a personal testimony about the world around us. This is undoubtedly the reason why he repeatedly and urgently raises current and not very popular topics, which in its artistic reflection also reflect the status and direction of our civilization. Installation of the exhibition was designed by an architect Josef Pleskot who incorporated even a glass wall facade of the National Museum New Building – the former Federal Assembly – into a spatial concept of the exhibition which visually and symbolically interlinked it with the place of Palach's feat. Exhibition projects by Jiří Sozanský are accompanied by extensive publications with texts by historians and philosophers, which go beyond the catalogue scope in the sphere of peculiar artistic deed of intermedial nature.
The exhibition itself includes large-format paintings, assemblages, collages and photographs as well as two documentaries – interview of Jiří Sozanský with Olbram Zoubek and a recording of the evening at the National Theatre titled JAN 69 dedicated to Jan Palach. The work by Jiří Sozanský is represented in the collections of number of both Czech and foreign art museums. In 2016, Jiří Sozanský was given the title Knight of Czech Culture, awarded by the Minister of Culture of the Czech Republic.
