The CNN news server ranked the Christmas markets at Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square together as among the top 10 in the world. Furthermore, Prague was listed as the number one place for a Christmas vacation by news magazine U.S. News & World Report. And needless to say, they’re right! Come immerse yourself in the holiday atmosphere fragrant with mulled wine and gingerbread, and do a little gift shopping for yourself or your loved ones.

Your youngest ones can look forward to workshops, demonstrations of folk crafts and animals. Come and see sheep, a llama and a donkey near to the nativity scene, located nearby the Christmas tree.

This year, you can find here also the symbols of the Prague’s history.

The Christmas tree is lighted daily at 4.30, 5.30, 6.30, 7.30, 8.30, 9.30 p.m. The organisers have prepared two special light animations (2.05 minute long). The first one is inspired by the symphonic poem Vltava - the Moldau by Bedřich Smetana; the second by the title track of Krkonošské pohádky - Giant Mountains Fairy Tales by Vadim Petrov.

Golden-white with elements of red and green are colours of the market. At the tree you will see giant straw ornaments, six hundred stars and special Christmas ornaments inspired by stained glass and typical Christmas motifs. The stands' decorations unveil something about Prague's history – (come and recognise Charles IV, Rudolph II, rabbi Löw, Franz Kafka). The light silhouettes of the St Vitus Cathedral' Gothic portals dominate to the traditional viewpoint bridge.

The rich accompanying programme features folk, dance and music performances. The workshops for children are held during weekends.

Opening time of the stands:

  • Stands with products: 10 a.m. to 10 pm.
  • Stands with refreshment: 10 a.m. till midnight.

The variety of food and beverages sold at the market is very generous. Visitors may look forward to traditional Czech food as barbecued pork, blood sausages, Czech muffins, conkers, beer, mull, mead and other typical gastronomical specialties from Old Czech cuisine.
It’s mostly the wood-carved toys, glass-work ware, blacksmith´s ware or confectionery which is sold at the Market. You can buy also every sort of Christmas goods like decorations, chains etc. What is new for this year are special cups for drinks that are served here.

In contrast to some bigger markets across the Europe, the Prague Christmas Market is sort of familiar, which makes the whole experience more intensive.
