From a Thread to a Shirt / Medieval Textile Production and Dyeing in Prague

Textile and similar products played an important part of the everyday life in medieval Prague. Archaeological textile findings are important sources to understand the appearance, quality, and use of textile products in the past.
The exhibition focuses on the medieval textile and dyeing crafts in the 14th and 15th century. There is described the process of textile production; equipment of a weaving and a dyeing room is presented. In addition, the practical use of various types of textile in everyday life is explained and one can find out what was considered to be fashionable by the inhabitants of the New Town of Prague in the High Middle Ages. Visitors should give their attention also to a unique collection of medieval textile fragments discovered during an archaeological research of the dump layers in the centre of Prague.
Furthermore, expert analytical researches and restoration processes will be described. The original archaeological findings, ethnographic materials, models of production facilities will be displayed. Visitors can also look forward to tangible parts of the exhibition and workshops revealing some processes of the textile production.
