The Greek Passion
- 13. 9. 2017
An opera in four acts in Czech.
Opera epilogue of Bohuslav Martinů „The Greek Passion“ where the humanistic message excels at faith and emotion. Novel of Nikos Kazantzakis “Christ Recrucified” captured the composer by the destiny of refugees in the middle of a carefree and indifferent world. The composer himself, used to be a refugee from his own country. With untraditional technique and composer inventions, portrays the world of Church, real faith and life in the Greek countryside. Elaborated opera drama The Greek Passion was supposed to be first performed in London, however, the premiere never took place. London was waiting for the opera (London version) for forty-two years. After rejection, the composer did not put the work away, however, rewrote into a new concept, more depressing, more opera-like and musically, more grand. Unfortunately, he did not manage to experience the performance as the work was first staged in Zurich, June 9, 1961, almost two years after the composer’s death.
