When the 76-year-old Josef Sudek (1896–1976) visited he Johannes Kepler and Prague exhibition held at the Belvedere (also called Queen Anne’s Summer Palace) in Prague, he returned to a place he knew well. Set in the Royal Gardens of Prague Castle, the Renaissance-style edifice had enchanted him long before. The exhibition commemorated the reign of the melancholic Emperor Rudolf II, when, around 1600, Prague was full of prominent European scientists and artists. Sudek was fascinated by Mannerist art in all its forms; at the exhibition, he admired not only the objects on view, but also the reflections of the glass. He incorporated these photographs into his mature series Memories; at the time, he was also working on his Glass Labyrinths and other accomplished photographic cycles.
