Prague Castle (Pražský hrad)

  • Map

Prague Castle had been for centuries the Czech royal and imperial residence. No wonder it was chosen by first Czechoslovak President Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk as his administrative seat, when he took office in December 1918. It soon became clear the castle needed substantial remodelling to befit a head of State. The task fell to Jože Plečnik, a Slovenian architect, entirely entrusted by Masaryk. His modifications to Prague Castle are evident to this day. They include e.g. the Granite obelisk, the Bull stairs, The Columnar Hall and the South garden.
