Santini’s buildings are so precise that if we know the compositional system of one, it is then a walk in the park to calculate that of any other of his. From this point of view, the buildings appear more like the shells of tightly fitting geometric equations. This gives them a truly unique proportional rhythm that we subconsciously perceive and consider harmonic. But what is most ingenious in Santini’s work is in fact invisible. Thanks to the use of the same compositional system and unit of measurement, this set of selected buildings forms a unique, indivisible whole, by its proportions and dimensions in harmony with St Vitus’ Cathedral. From the dimensions of one building, it is possible, by way of geometry, to derive the measurements and proportions of another. This exhibition explains the geometry of the compositional system common to the plans of the main works of the Bohemian architect Jan Blažej Santini Aichel. Many indices, however, point to the fact that the compositional system he used is traditional and that awareness of it in the Bohemian Lands extends back to the early 11th century.
