Dobříš Château – Rococo with a hint of Socialism

This Rococo château with a French garden and an English park was the go-to place for Communist era bigwigs and the venue of many important events. During totalitarian times it served as the recreation centre of the Union of Czech Writers, as well as the venue of their regular conferences and conventions. It is currently owned by the noble family Colloredo-Mansfeld. Dobříš and its surroundings are a popular destination for tourists and cycling enthusiasts.

Don’t miss:

Dobříš château offers eleven showpiece rooms in the Classicist and Rococo styles, as well as a ghost museum, where visitors can get acquainted with the spooks of Dobříš. The exhibition, in the château attic space was put together on the basis of local legends and is intended primarily for parents with children.

A visit to the historical interiors comes complete with a writer’s room decked out in 1970s style, to remind of the times when the castle was under the administration of the Union of Czech Writers and served as the so-called Writers’ Home.

In Dobříš, visitors have the opportunity to get acquainted with two different approaches to the outdoors. The château complex includes two different gardens – French, typified by ornate geometry, and an English park that is closer to a natural landscape.

Pride of place in the French garden is taken by a fountain, depicting the watering of Helios’ chariot horses. The large English park with ponds right by the château is a popular place for relaxing walks.
