A confrontation between the music of J. S. Bach and J. D. Zelenka always offers an interesting comparison. Zelenka’s Missa Sanctissimae Trinitatis (1736) dates from the beginning of his peak creative period, and it anticipates all of the important features of his later masses. Bach’s Mass in A Major, one of the four so-called Lutheran Masses, dates from approximately the same time as Zelenka’s mass. In contrast with Zelenka’s showy work, however, Bach’s composition stands out for its extraordinary intimacy and simplicity of expression.
