Who Doesn't Want To Believe Can Leave
Vltavín Gallery, Masarykovo nábřeží 36, Praha 1 - Nové Město, 110 00
- Wed 16. 1. 2019 – Sun 17. 2. 2019
The exhibition presents Hoffmeister’s illustrations to his own pieces of literature (Binoculars or Who Doesn't Want To Believe Can Leave, A Postcard from China, Made in Japan, Skyscrapers in a Forest) and also to the works of other writers such as Stories by Jiří Wolker or Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne. When creating these illustrations Hoffmeister experimented with different techniques – collages, montages, drawing, calligraphy, photography.
Adolf Hoffmeister (1902-1973) was one of the founders of the avant-garde Devetsil group of Czech artists and writers. Imprisoned during the war, Hoffmeister managed to escape and flee to New York, where his anti-fascist drawings were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art. Further on, he served as the Czechoslovak ambassador to France to 1951, taught at the Academy of Fine Arts, Design and Architecture and was a president of International PEN.
