The World Press Photo of the Year honors the photographer whose visual creativity and skills made a picture that captures or represents an event or issue of great journalistic importance in that year.
The contest is organized into categories: Contemporary Issues, Environment, General News, Long-Term Projects, Nature, Portrait, Sports, Spot News.
This year, the contest saw 4,738 photographers from 129 countries enter 78,801 images. The nominees were from 25 countries, 14 of 43 nominees were women. The winning image of this edition shows a Honduran small girl crying as her mother being taken into custody by US border. Its author is John Moore, a senior staff photographer and special correspondent for Getty Images. Czech photographer Michael Hanke received the 2nd prize in the Sport category for his „Never Saw Him Cry“ series.
Visitors will also Prague’s Prize photographs representing a foreign photographer.
Organisers are also preparing an accompanying programme.
