Every Czech orchestra has to play the symphonic poems Má vlast (My Country). The Prague Symphony Orchestra FOK has been playing it each year traditionally on the anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia, which took place in the ‘Beacon of the Czech statehood’, the Municipal House. Smetana’s cycle completely captures our soul, the old and the contemporary. Last year’s performance to mark the 100th anniversary was accompanied by the release of a re-mastered Prague Symphony Orchestra FOK recording with Tomáš Netopil. But there is no better way than to hear it live and this year, for the first time, with the Prague Symphony Orchestra FOK chief guest conductor, Jac van Steen. It’s always interesting to hear a foreign conductor’s interpretation of My Country; it is different, and it is inspiring!
