Franz Kafka

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Franz Kafka – the most famous early 20th century Jewish author from Prague. His mother tongue was German, and all of his writings are in German, but he spent his entire life among Czechs. He was born in Prague’s Old Town and had exceptionally strong ties with the city throughout his entire life.

“Prague doesn’t let go. Of either of us.”

“This old crone has claws. One has to yield, or else - we would have to set fire to it on two sides, at Vyšehrad and at Hradčany; then it would be possible for us to get away.”

This is how Franz Kafka,
one of the most influential writers of the 20th century,
described his uncritical love for Prague and inability to leave it
in a letter to Oskar Pollak on 20 December 1902.
