Chapel of the Old Town Hall

Few people know that from the Old Town Hall Chapel you can look right into the inner workings of the Prague Astronomical Clock and also watch the apostles trooping past the windows from the inside. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary is located on the first floor and was founded soon after the construction of the Town Hall Tower. It was consecrated in 1381. Services used to be held here before every Town Council meeting, and were also served for those incarcerated here, or those sentenced to death, before their short walk to the execution site. Masses were also served here to wish well to the monarch, and funeral services were also common. The chapel comprises a transverse nave and a five-sided bay window. Visible from the outside on the corner of the bay window is a copy of a remarkable Gothic statue, known as the Old Town Madonna, an exemplary sculptural piece dating from the end of the 14th century. The Old Town Hall Chapel is one of the most highly prized heritage buildings on Czech soil. The stained-glass windows make a fascinating decorative element.

Practical information

The Chapel is part of the Old Town Hall tour.
The entrance ticket also gives access to the Reception Halls, the Tower and the Romanesque-Gothic Cellars.
