The National Library of the Czech Republic (Národní knihovna ČR)

The National Library of the Czech Republic, the largest and oldest public library in the country, is housed in the unique Baroque premises of the former Jesuit College in the Clementinum. Its universal library collection is focused on the needs of university-type colleges and research institutes. The collection which contains over 7 million items also includes rare old prints and manuscripts. The most precious one, the Vyšehrad Codex, dates back to before the year 1085. The 27,000 historical volumes of the permanent collection are housed in the unique Baroque library hall.

Practical information

You can take a guided tour of the library hall as part of the unique sightseeing route The Clementinum Astronomical Tower and Baroque Library. The sightseeing route is operated by Prague City Tourism.
The mirror chapel with a richly designed interior and mirrors that are unparalleled anywhere in Bohemia is located in the fourth courtyard of the Clementinum on the ground floor of the wing that connects the Astronomical Tower with the north wing of the college on Platnéřská Street. This is where classical music concerts, as well as cultural and social events and weddings regularly take place.
