Man - Instrument - Music

National Museum – Czech Museum of Music (České muzeum hudby), Karmelitská 4, Praha 1 - Malá Strana

When?

permanent exhibition

The exhibition "Man - Instrument - Music" presents musical instruments not only as remarkable examples of craftsmanship and artistry, but also as essential intermediaries between man and music. From the hustle and bustle of a world overloaded with recorded and computer-created music of all genres, as conveyed by the entrance hall exhibition, the visitor enters into an intimate environment of halls devoted to periods when one had to make and take an instrument into their hand in order to be able to play and hear music. The exhibition passes through time and discovers the different ways in which musical instruments form tones, how musical notation for different types of musical instruments looked, how those instruments were played, and during which social occasions they were used. The museum’s collection includes sheet music, rare musical instruments, old gramophone records, and items from the estates of Czech musicians. One especially rare item on display is the fortepiano that Mozart played at the Institute of Noblewomen during his visit to Prague in 1787.
