Prague metro iconic design

Prague has one of the best public transit systems in the world. One of its integral components is the Prague metro, which boasts another unique feature: it is a vast gallery of artwork, architectural and designer elements. The interiors of some metro stations are indeed among the most photogenic in Europe, owing primarily to the unique tile cladding on the walls, designed by the chief architect of the Prague metro, Jaroslav Otruba. The most appealing tiles are those embellishing the station tunnels on line A. The combination of selected material, proportions and colours creates a unique spatial illusion that delights aficionados of engineering and art alike.

Jaroslav Otruba

Czech designer, architect and artist Jaroslav Otruba was a prominent figure in Czechoslovak architecture and had a major impact on the appearance of Prague’s metro. His most famous work today is the design of the iconic shaped tiles made of anodised aluminium on metro line A. Time has confirmed the extraordinary quality of this work, which has become a symbol not only of the Prague metro, but of the city itself.

Because the stations on line A were built using the tunnel boring method, the cladding on the walls had to meet not only demanding technological requirements, but also aesthetic ones.  Jaroslav Otruba used the highly complex technique of anodising, in which the aluminium tiles were coloured using organic dyes. This results in stunning colours, and each tile is an original with a distinctive and indescribable metallic sheen you will love.
